WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. – Officials with the visitors bureau in Wilmington say it is business as usual after Hurricane Earl passed by offshore Friday morning.

The southeast coast of North Carolina was left unscathed by the hurricane, just in time for Labor Day weekend. The Laubscher family almost didn't go on vacation. They kept a close eye on the storm before leaving Ohio Thursday night for the 11 hour drive to the Carolina coast.

"Do we go, do we wait it out and do we take the risk. So , we are going. look at it, it's wonderful," said Ellen Laubscher.

Shell Island Resort representatives say the hurricane didn't cause too many cancellations, it mostly forced vacationers to wait until the last minute to make reservations. Since the storm passed, the phones have been ringing steadily with people looking to see if the coast was clear to come down for a holiday.

"We are seeing such an influx of calls coming in. We have rooms, we are open. It is a beautiful day and it is going to be a great weekend at Wrightsville Beach," said Dixon Putnam, director of sales.

After spending time biking and kayaking, the Laubschers say they will be heading up to Topsail Island after Labor Day to finish the rest of their vacation.

"Everything is supposed to be good up there as well,” said Paul Laubscher.

Tourism officials say they will know by next week what type of an effect the hurricane had over the Labor Day weekend.
