WILMINGTON -- When the bell rings for the first day of school Wednesday, students at Wrightsboro Elementary will be back in their own building. They had to be relocated for several months at the end of last year because of a mold problem.
Principal Boni Hall said the school was give a clearance in May that all the mold was taken care of, and now faculty said they have no doubts about moving back in.
"All of the duct work, the air conditioning units have been cleaned or either replaced. We've had carpet that's been removed from the buildings and replaced with vinyl flooring so everything is clean and ready to go," said Hall.
When the school year starts, fourth grade teacher Barbara Mack said she knows there are bound to be question from the students and she is prepared.
"You have to put it in a child's terms. They took down all the tiles, they cleaned out everything that was up there, they removed the carpet and put fresh tiles, a kid understands that," she said.
While crews were cleaning up the mold, students were relocated to Holly Shelter Middle School and Castle Hayne Elementary.
Hall said they are now educating faculty and staff on recognizing the signs of mold to keep this from happening again.
