WILMINGTON—The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission met this week in Wilmington.
On the agenda were items affecting the opening of bay scallop harvesting and drafting an amendment to the southern flounder fishery management. The Commission said managing the fishing of species in coastal waters is key to keeping the ecosystem and the fishing economy strong.
"The bay scallops fishery has kind of gone up and down, for several years it was closed because the stocks had gotten so low, the past few years we've been able to open certain areas," said Patricia Smith with N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries
The Commission holds business meetings every quarter in different locations across North Carolina.
