WILMINGTON -- Operation Salsa Drop is underway as Flaming Amy's Burrito Barn out of Wilmington is on a mission to deliver salsa to troops overseas. There is just something about the salsa because the troops in Afghanistan are asking for it by name.
"It's thrilling just talking about it gives me the chills," said Amy Muxworthy owner of Flaming Amy's. It is nice to know that they love it so much and it's one of things they think about it while they are over there."
Amy and her husband Jay said Operation Salsa Drop all got started with a joking Facebook message from a soldier, Pfc. Justin Young.
"It started because of you and he wrote back saying that it was really exciting and he shared it with guys in his unit and that it was especially nice to get because it was his birthday the day he got the email," said Muxworthy.
Young isn't the only soldier with a craving for Flaming Amy's. On Flaming Amy's Facebook page you can see a soldier standing next to a Flaming Amy's bumper sticker on the back of a HUM VEE in Afghanistan.
The couple set out to accomplish their mission to get it to the troops. After experimenting with different way to ship it, the decision was made to bottle up three of the most popular flavors: fresh tomato, hot and pineapple jalapeno.
The goal is to begin having the salsa bottled by mid August. Flaming Amy's is working with N.C. State to get their nutritional value on the labels and get FDA approval.
Jay and Amy Muxworthy are working to make Operation Salsa Drop a non-profit. They said all the sales will be rolled back into the company to make more salsa.
