NEW BERN, N.C. -- Police say a woman filed an assault complaint against the mayor of New Bern.

Maria Maynard accused Mayor Lee Wilson Bettis of shaking her while she was in a YMCA pool.

Bettis told the Jacksonville Daily News that the incident did not happen and called it “troubling and hurtful.”

News 14 Carolina reached out to the mayor for comment but the paper reports he spent part of Wednesday giving his account of the incident to police and his secretary said he would not be in his office.
