ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. -- A 4-year-old girl drowned Friday in Onslow County at a pond not far from her house.

It happened just before 5 p.m. in the Richlands area.

Sheriff's deputies said the young girl wandered away from her house. The pond was located on her father's property.

She was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital but died a short time later.

The sheriff's office is investigating.
