CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. – A new beach safety program in Carolina Beach is helping lost kids with newly-painted lifeguard stands and matching colored wristbands.

Lisa Lee, a mother of four, got her kids fitted with the safety wristbands this weekend.

"I think it is a good idea; it keeps your children safe,” she said. “That way, you know where they are at and if they were to get lost they would be able to contact someone."

The wristband colors match the nearest lifeguard stand, so children that go missing can easily be placed back in the location of their families.

"The parents actually have to come up to the stands and request the wristbands; we aren't just handing them out,” said lifeguard, Josh Fleming. “The colors match the towers so if any children get lost it will be really easy to find them."

Lifeguards say they had at least 15 children go missing over Memorial Day weekend alone. They say a program like this will help alleviate pressure from watching the beach and focus on their primary concern – the water.

The No Lost Child Program is modeled after similar programs used by the U.S. Lifesaving Association
