MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The sound of music is bringing together the North Myrtle Beach Community as part of an effort to help the victims of last month's wildfire.
Arlo Guthrie performed at the benefit concert in the Alabama Theatre. All proceeds from the event will help people like Melinda Chappell rebuild.
"I see excitement in my life now and I have nothing, so I am starting fresh," said Chappell.
This massive wildfire caused more than $25 million in damage, and forestry officials said the fire destroyed 75 homes and damaged another 100.
Patti Hilton helped organize the benefit concert and said she is hoping thousands of dollars roll in.
"On the low end, we are looking at $10,000 but we are hoping for maybe $15,000 to $20,000," said Hilton.
Organizers will hand those funds over to the Red Cross, which will be distributing it to local families.
"There are people that didn't have insurance. There were some people, poor people, that lost everything. And it was just amazing to watch the fires burn," Hilton said. "It affected the whole community and it affected economy and everyone wants to help and do something."
Chappell said giving goes a long way.
"The clothes I have on are gifts and I left with nothing, so I would be amiss to say that we need each other," said Chappell
She said the community effort is keeping the victims optimistic.
"Fire didn't destroy my life. I look at it again as a future and an opportunity," said Chappell.
