CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. – The Morehead City Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee wrote a cookbook that recently won the national Tabasco Brand Community Cookbook award.

The cookbook boasts 370 pages of recipes, all with traditions and roots based in the area.

“It’s exciting for the citizens of Morehead City. For the ladies that when I was growing up, they told the stories, we got the recipes from them,” DJ Femia Leeuwenburg, the cookbook committee chairman, said. “[The recipes] are tied to traditions to people within the community. It also has historical references to Morehead City.”

The same people who are featured in the book are making sure it continues to fly off the shelves.

About 100 people are on a waiting list for the book at a shop downtown, which is not a surprise to workers there.

“It’s just wonderful thoughts, and my family memories that I think even newcomers can enjoy to get a better understanding of what makes Morehead City Morehead City,” resident Jenny Morrison said.

People form hundreds of cities from across the country entered their cookbooks in the contest. To find out how to buy the cookbook, click here.
