Alberto has weakened to a tropical depression as it spins off the coast of the Carolinas. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Alberto's maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph Monday evening.

A coastal ministry is helping create a safe environment for people fleeing war-torn countries. Interfaith Refugee Ministry has played a huge part in helping residents from Burma, Cuba, and Columbia resettle in Wilmington for the past two years. The agency held a cornhole tournament on Sunday to help raise funds for their program.

The first tropical storm of the hurricane season has formed off the coast of South Carolina with top winds of 60 mph, but it isn't threatening land. Forecasters said early Saturday evening that Tropical Storm Alberto was centered about 130 miles (209 kilometers) east of Charleston, S.C.

For the 18th year, The CarolinaEast Health System offered a free skin cancer screening Saturday where doctors continued to promote the importance of early detection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says North Carolina has one of the highest incident rates of skin cancer in the country.

A North Carolina scientist survived an alligator attack. Fred Boyce, an employee at a North Carolina aquarium, was trying to capture an 8-foot alligator along U.S 70 in Carteret County but was bitten on the arm.

The Greek Festival is in full swing this weekend in Wilmington and for $3 you can enter to hear some live music and buy delicious food but that's not the only event going on. In the historic downtown district a movie star is on display. The HMS Bounty, seen in "Mutiny on the Bounty" and the Pirates of the Caribbean series is open for tours this weekend.

The lockdown has been lifted at three schools in Wilmington following reports of shots fired in the area Friday. Gregory Elementary School, Williston Middle School and Lake Forest Academy were all locked down for precautionary measures for about 15 minutes.

Residents and visitors may soon have to pay an additional 1 percent sales tax. Town commissioners are asking the North Carolina General Assembly to allow them to create a sales tax to help fund beach nourishment projects. Rush said creating a "beach preservation tax" would generate between $700,000 to $800,000 a year.

Members of the Wilmington 10 have filed a petition for pardons of innocence from the state. The 10 were convicted of burning a store in Wilmington in 1971 and firing at firefighters who responded.
