CHARLOTTE – In the city's biggest jobs announcement in years, Convergys will expand its call centers in Southeast Charlotte by 1,600 employees.
"Great news for our local economy," said Brett Carter, chair of the Charlotte Chamber.
It's the largest single expansion in Charlotte since Wachovia brought 1,700 people here in 2006. Convergys will invest $1.8 million to expand a facility near McAlpine Park. Executives say these jobs are here to stay.
"Those are existing, long lasting jobs,” said Jo Fuller, program director at Convergys. “So far, we've had success in Charlotte, we've been able to retain the people we've hired."
By the end of May, Convergys hopes to fill the new jobs with ideal employees.
“Somebody who works well with others, somebody who does a good job listening and is solution oriented," Fuller said.
Company recruiters are meeting with applicants for two days, including people like Cheryl Jennings, who moved to Charlotte from Virginia four months ago.
"So I said well, let me come see," she said, encouraged by the interview. "It was awesome to talk to the representative."
Business leaders said Charlotte's become an attractive place for customer service jobs.
"In the last two years, the Charlotte Chamber has announced more than 3,000 call center jobs," Carter said.
That's part of what kept Convergys in Charlotte.
"Charlotte has a good employee and employer friendly environment. It's known for strong customer service. I think that's really the foundation. And we've had success in Charlotte."
The company will be holding a job fair on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the state Employment Security Office on Briar Creek Road in East Charlotte.
