CHARLOTTE—Supporters of the planned red line commuter rail project between Charlotte and Mooresville say their project remains on track, even though another study is set to get under way.

If built, the estimated $452 million project would include several stops along the Interstate 77 corridor and run on existing Norfolk Southern tracks. On Wednesday, the Red Line task force was updated on a planned one year study with Norfolk Southern that would determine the expected freight and commuter capacity on the tracks in the next 25 years.

Earlier this year, the company said it had concerns whether commuter rail could work on the existing line.

Meanwhile, Red Line supporters hope to finalize a financial plan for the Red Line early next year. It remains unclear when construction could begin.
