JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Three people were hurt when an Amtrak train carrying 64 passengers collided with a tractor-trailer near West Main Street in Jamestown south of Greensboro.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, about an hour before it was due to arrive in Raleigh. Amtrak said it was the Piedmont Train 74 en route from Charlotte to Raleigh. Officials say the tractor-trailer was carrying over 40,000 pounds of limestone.

The old Jamestown library has been turned into a temporary, makeshift shelter. Those who were injured have been transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after the crash, officials escorted passengers across the street to the Jamestown Public Library. About a dozen were planning to get off at the next stop in Greensboro, while others were en route to Raleigh.
