CHARLOTTE -- A Charlotte dog has a brand new fenced in area to play thanks to a group of volunteers with the Coalition to Unchain Dogs. The dog named Blackey had previously been tethered to a tree, but Sunday, he was the 100th dog the group let loose.

They say many dogs in the city are kept on chains, which poses a danger to the public and the dog so education is important.

"By being non-judgmental and talking to them about what they do and understanding why they do it, I think we can make a difference not just in the life of this dog, but dogs down the road," said

Vannette Wilson, the dog's owner, says she thinks Blackey was happier Sunday than she was to be receiving the fence.

"Now I don't have to worry about him chasing the mailman, trying to run away for hours at a time [or] have me worrying about him like he's one of my kids," she said.
