CHARLOTTE -- Even though the completion of the Charlotte streetcar line is still several years away, Charlotte city planners are moving forward with the design.
The planned ten mile route will go from Beatties Ford Road in West Charlotte through Uptown before ending at the Eastland Mall Transit Center.
The latest engineering work is almost complete giving planners a better idea for how the streetcar line's stops and cars can be built. Thanks to a federal grant, construction for the first streetcar leg will begin next year. It will go from the transit center in Uptown to Presbyterian Hospital.
“We can actually be working on a streetcar project that we can actually put in the roadway and that people will be able to ride,” said John Mrzygod, with the City of Charlotte.
At this point, planners believe the full streetcar build out will end up costing a little more than $450 million. That's the same estimate as two years ago.
