NEW YORK — A project aimed at making buildings in uptown Charlotte more energy efficient is getting national attention.

The project is called "Envision Charlotte." At Thursday's Clinton Global Initiative in New York, former President Bill Clinton was joined by city leaders to announce the project. The goal for the project is for the Queen City to lead the way in energy efficiency in the U.S..

One of the goals of the project is to create a Smart Grid system which monitors carbon emissions and compares the output to that of Raleigh, Atlanta and New York. The ultimate goal is to make buildings more energy efficient.

“The reduced energy consumption will naturally lead to a reduced carbon footprint,” said Yi Deng, with UNCC, College of Computing and Informatics.

Envision Charlotte will try to partner with the owners of about 60 commercial buildings in uptown. The goal is to reduce energy use by up to 20-percent by 2016.
