CHARLOTTE -- The futures of 32 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are up in the air. Superintendent Peter Gorman released the list Tuesday, saying the schools could be expanded, downsized or closed.
"These are schools that are overcrowded, schools that are undercrowded, schools whose academic performance might not be where we want it to be," Gorman said.
Gorman says although closing schools is a possibility, it's not being considered for every school on the list but he is preparing for some tough decisions. Right now, he says the district is coming up with ways to deal with the issues targeted at each school.
Highland Creek Elementary is at 154 percent capacity. PTA president Karen Peterson says a lot of parents are going to be emotionally torn between their students leaving Highland Creek and maybe going to a school that does have room.
Davidson IB is also on the list. The uncertainty is not only affecting administration, but parents as well.
"We keep our teachers focused, our students focused and what we can control, we control and what we can't, we just take it as it comes," said Davidson IB principal Jo Karney.
"My hope is that they don't close this school. It's an amazing school. It truly is an amazing school," added PTSA president-elect Pam Dolaher.
CMS board members are being asked to come up with possible solutions by next week. The public will have the chance to comment after Sept. 28.
