MECKLENBURG COUNTY— More people are expected to be on the roads this Labor Day weekend, and that means more work for law enforcement.
AAA expects road trips will be up 8-percent this year for the holiday weekend and the State Highway Patrol is responding with several safety initiatives. Speed is the leading cause of traffic deaths on the state's highways, and Troopers are looking for speeders and aggressive drivers.
Seven people died in car crashes across the state during last year's Labor Day weekend. Troopers are also enforcing the Click it or Ticket initiative and a program they call CARE—Combined Accident Reduction Effort. That's where they work with local police and sheriff's deputies to be more present and visible. reminding people to slow down.
AAA expects about 930,000 North Carolinians to travel this weekend and that doesn't count the vacationers who will be coming here from out of state. In fact, the agency reports hotel bookings show Raleigh as one of the top 7 vacation destinations this weekend. The DOT stops most construction during holiday weekends, but work is still going on along U.S. 17 in Onslow County and Glenwood Avenue and U.S. 70 in Wake County.
