CHARLOTTE -- A keen-eyed business owner spotted several suspects trying to steal copper overnight Monday. It happened at a strip mall on South Boulevard in south Charlotte.

That business owner called 911 after seeing at least three suspects on top of the strip mall at the corner of South Boulevard and Woodlawn Road. Police were able to get there in time to arrest two of those suspects. At least one other remains on the loose.

Police say the thieves stole the copper from five AC units on the roof of the strip mall that includes a Home Depot store. After calling police, the owner of the Chip Nutty Cookies store kept an eye on the suspects as they ran, helping police locate them. Officers have yet to find that stolen copper.

Copper closed Friday at $3.36 a pound. Most scrap metal businesses buy copper.

Police are still looking for at least one other suspect in this copper theft. They have not released a description of that person.
