DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The police force at Davidson College will retain its powers to enforce state laws, for now.
The state Supreme Court granted a motion for a temporary stay in the case Thursday. That decision came after last week’s ruling by the state court of appeals that the police department violates the First Amendment because of the school's close association with the Presbyterian Church.
The case started in 2006 when a driver argued that the Davidson College police department should not have been able to arrest her because of its religious affiliation.
The stay was granted so that justices could decide whether to hear an appeal in the case.
