CHARLOTTE -- On the heels of a violent weekend, Charlotte City Council approved a measure on Monday to provide a $76,000 grant to help crime victims and their families.
The money will fund the formation of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Support Group. The group will be run by a support specialist, retired homicide sergeant and volunteers.
Mayor Anthony Foxx said the city has to continue looking for ways to be a resource for distraught families.
"Well it's just gonna be a way of providing more support for victims of homicide," said Foxx.
Part of the support group's mission: hold monthly meetings, helping families navigate the criminal justice process and file for victim's compensation benefits.
Which is similar to what mother's of murdered offspring does.
"Although our services aren't forced on anybody, we're there if you want us there," said Judy Williams, the executive director of MOM-O.
The initial $76,000 grant is for one year. City officials believe they will get a second year of funding for the CMPD Homicide Support Group.
