CHARLOTTE – Just days away from the start of the fall semester, staff at Independence High School were shocked to find their building littered with graffiti Wednesday morning.

A series of blue letters and numbers were found spray painted on the front of the main building and a number of mobile classrooms and activity buses.

"Anytime someone does something foolish like that it saddens me,” said Superintendent Peter Gorman.

CMPD's Gang Unit, as well as CMS security, are working to determine if it's gang-related. Many gang identification websites say "IGC," which was found written around the property, stands for 'Insane Gangster Crip' and is typically found on the West Coast.

"They're out there investigating who did it and we're working as we speak to get it cleaned up in time for the open house tomorrow," said Latarja Henry with CMS.

Just a few miles away, similar graffiti was found on the side of a Rite Aid Pharmacy on Albemarle Road.

Police cannot say whether the two are related.
