CHARLOTTE – The Neighborhood Theater in NoDa is not closing according to owner Tyler Foster, but there will be some changes. Earlier this week, the management team at the music venue announced it would be moving on, leading to concerns the intimate concert hall would close.
But Foster said he's in talks with viable candidates to run the venue. He also said the establishment built in 1945 is there to stay, but the changes only involve the management group that has booked shows for the past seven years.
“Our best record month was Febraury of last year,” JEM Entertainment Inc. co-owner Zach McNabb said. “It was a fantastic, huge, huge month for us.”
But March wasn't so good. The economy began to affect ticket sales. They hung on and had a few good months, but 2009 didn't end on a high note.
“Then we decided that it was time,” McNabb said. “It was a business decision that we were, unfortunately, we just could not make the facility work anymore for our needs. And what we wanted to do and the way we would like to run our business.”
JEM Entertainment is booking through March and has a lot of big names to hang their hat on, including the Black Crowes, Steven Stills, Herbie Hancock and the Indigo Girls.
“These are all well known folks out there,” McNabb said. “We've done shows with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, huge bands back in the days.”
Foster said he is negotiating with a few other candidates to step in.
