CONCORD – The controversy surrounding a kiosk in Concord Mills Mall continues to swirl, after the owner of Free Market Warrior -- which sells politically charged items like bumper stickers and t-shirts -- says the mall will not renew his lease at the end of July.
The owner, Loren Spivack, never imagined the attention he’d get since first talking with News 14 Carolina about his business. Now, the story is gaining national attention from conservative talk radio to Fox Business.
"The response has been absolutely terrific,” said Spivack. “I never thought it would get this large.”
Concord Mills officials say “it is a matter of corporate policy” why they will not renew the conservative kiosk. Spivack says it shouldn’t be like that.
"Let the shoppers at the mall decide what they want to buy. Not one person was ever forced to buy anything."
One man, who did not want to be identified, says he was asked to leave the mall office when he tried to file a complaint because of obscene merchandise in one of the mall’s stores.
"As soon as I told her I was there to complain about Spencer’s, they basically told me to leave the mall right then,” said the man, who continued to explain that he was escorted out by six security cops. A spokesperson for Concord Mills says mall management says there was no report of such an incident.
Spivack, who says he believes in people being free to buy products they want to buy while expressing the viewpoints they have, has heard from other malls willing to lease him space. He would not comment on which malls those were.
The kiosk owner says he will be on Fox News’ Glenn Beck show Friday.
