CHARLOTTE -- As North Carolinians get ready to enjoy the holiday weekend, law enforcement officers are gearing up to remind people that many fireworks are illegal in the Tar Heel State.

Tuesday, the ATF along with Charlotte fire and police departments teamed up to show some of the damage that can be done if you don’t use fireworks properly.

Any firework that spins, explodes or leaves the ground is illegal in North Carolina. But since they are legal in nearby South Carolina, police say if you do buy any of those types of fireworks there are some things to be aware of.

There are more fires reported around July 4 than any other time of the year.
