CHARLOTTE – Airfare analysis say now is the time to grab tickets for those looking to travel anytime soon.
Officials with FareCompare.com, a Web site that tracks ticket prices, say airfare has gone up in the past two weeks, which is a sign that the bottom has been reached or is near. They recommend travelers buy at the cheaper prices now before the cost goes up.
Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, says prices have bottomed out and will only rise after Independence Day. The price drop has been caused, at least in part, by less business travelers due to the recession. That’s leaving airlines with little choice as they compete for customers.
"If you're paying over $300 for your trip, domestic U.S. travel, you're probably paying too much," Seaney said.
Seaney studies airfare changes and says there are certain red flags, like fare hikes, that indicate prices have bottomed out.
"We saw that discounting start to slow down in mid May and has pretty much come to a stop here in June," Seaney said.
The U.S. Travel Association's Travel Price Index says the cost of airfares is down by 4.1 percent through the first quarter of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008.
As for holiday travel, AAA says it will likely be down this year, though airfare bookings expected to be up about 5 percent for the holiday weekend.
