CHARLOTTE – The group Homeless Helping Homeless organized a solidarity sleep-out Friday night to ask the community to help fund 250 more shelter beds in Charlotte.
The beds are a part of the city’s 10-year plan to end homelessness.
Local leaders and state representatives said the need in the Charlotte area is growing every year.
“When you talk about people who are homeless, quite often they are not seen,” Sue Myric said. “That’s the problem.”
The emergency winter shelter off Statesville Road closed Friday. Shelter Director Jon White said 10 percent more people used the facility this year compared with last.
Workers will spend the next two weeks getting the facility ready for women to stay there this summer.
