CHARLOTTE – The superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools presented his budget recommendations to school board members Tuesday night.

His proposal includes hundreds of job cuts, including 750 teachers. But uncertainty surrounding the state budget and the federal stimulus money leaves the fate of those jobs up in the air.

That's why Dr. Peter Gorman called Tuesday night's budget "written in pencil."

Gorman said CMS could end up giving hundreds of employees pink slips, then calling them back to work.

Despite millions of dollars in cuts, CMS will not ask the county for any more money this year – the budget will remain the same as last year at $1.1 billion.

Cuts are coming from all over, including learning communities and CMS TV.

Gorman said he's hoping the county will grant CMS' full budget request in the coming months, although full requests haven't been honored by the county. He says he'll be keeping his pencil close by as CMS continues to learn more about the local and state budgets.

"I'd love to tell you that the numbers are final and we know exactly where we're going, but we know there's great flux to it," Gorman said.

School board members did not vote on tonight's budget recommendations. They'll do that next month.

CMS will hold a public hearing on the budget April 28.
