CHARLOTTE – Easter Sunday turned deadly for some Charlotte residents and their families this year, with two separate domestic violence shootings.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was called to a home in north Charlotte where police believe a man shot and killed his girlfriend. Within hours police were called to another shooting in east Charlotte where a father was suspected of shooting his son.

Police said around 3:30 p.m. Sunday they got a call at a home on Biesterfield Drive; the caller said there was a domestic dispute and shots were fired.

"When officers arrived on the scene, a male subject immediately came out and surrendered to the officers and was taken into custody," said Sgt. Steve Huber with CMPD.

Police said 37-year old Vernon Price Blackman was charged with homicide. They said Blackman shot and killed his live in girlfriend, 31-year-old Yolanda Nikkia Hill.

"I heard sirens, went to the door looked out and two police cars were going down the street," said neighbor Shirley Hobbs.

Hobbs didn’t know the victim or the suspect, but said she was still upset to know something like the shooting could happen so close to home.

"So close to where you live at and to think that your neighborhood is being hurt in a sense, because of somebody's senseless act," added Hobbs.

In the east Charlotte incident, police said the suspected gunman was a father, and the victim was his son.

Police haven’t released the names of the victim and suspect in the Coach Hill Lane shooting. There is no update on the victim's condition.
