CONCORD, N.C. – Several dozen drivers raced Wednesday evening at the zMAX Dragway at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. For the first time there, drivers got a chance to drive as fast as they want in street legal cars against other enthusiasts.
All sorts of makes and models went head to head, going as fast down the quarter mile as their rides allowed.
Officials said the race is a deterrent. It aims to keep racing in a safe environment instead of area roads where people can get hurt.
Investigators said last weekend, a mother and her young daughter, as well as another passenger, were killed when a driver was racing around a dangerous curve and collided with another vehicle.
But by offering a safe racing environment, officials hope to keep tragedies like that from happening.
