CHARLOTTE -- Five people including four firefighters are recovering after a car accident involving a fire truck and an SUV on Monday morning.

The incident happened at the intersection of South Boulevard and Woodlawn Road. Firefighters were on the way to another accident on Interstate 77 at the time.

The driver of the SUV had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The four firefighters on the fire truck were taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

“Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is going to look in to the factors that led up to this crash with the fire truck,” said Capt. Rob Brisley of the Charlotte Fire Department. “But each year firefighters respond to nearly 90,000 calls for service and we never want something like this to happen.”

Emergency officials say these situations are more common than people might think. They say navigating traffic in an emergency vehicle can be dangerous -- especially at intersections and even on open highways.

"Every single day we have close calls, that's because people just aren't paying attention or just don't know what to do," said MEDIC spokesperson Eric Morrison.

The injuries are not life threatening. South Blvd. southbound was closed while CMPD investigated.
