WILMINGTON — Election day is fast approaching and on Thursday, the focus was getting the younger generations involved.

A voter registration drive was held on UNCW's campus  to encourage college students to make their voices heard. According to the New Hanover County Board of Elections, the effort is paying off with the current number of voter registrations in the county topping those received by this point in 2008.

Walking up to complete strangers, and asking them to register to vote is now second nature for student Dakota Cary. He is a member of "Seahawks for Obama" and has been registering students on all ends of the political spectrum for several weeks.

"When you think about how important it is, your fears just kinda get put to the side because big picture, we need these people to vote," said Cary.

Students say it is a critical time to pay attention and get into the voting booth in November.

"I feel like being informed is very important, knowing who you are voting for and why you are voting for them, what they believe and how you think that is going to change the country," said student Nolan Wilson.
