A Union County man, 26-year-old Igor Borodin, could face up to 10 years in prison, and up to a $5 million dollar fine, for charges of trafficking counterfeit airbags.

More than 1,600 counterfeit airbags were found at his home and business Thursday.

Borodin is in pretrial detention until his next hearing.

The prosecution argued that he poses a flight risk because he is not a U.S. citizen and they seized a large amount of cash on Thursday.

Area residents that heard about this case say they didn't even know counterfeit airbags existed.

"You're riding around with one that you'll never know is fake until you get in an accident and then it doesn't come out. You got kids, you never now. You got a chance of losing a family member over something you paid for, and that's really serious," said Hal Stephens.

The judge never said whether or not these counterfeit airbags would work in an accident, but he did say, it's a risk to the community.

Borodin will appear in court again on Wednesday.
