DURHAM -- A Durham woman is now a saint. Last week, the episcopal church named Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray a saint.

Wednesday night, about 200 people attended an annual celebration of Murray's life at her childhood church, Saint Titus' Episcopal in Durham. She died in 1985. Murray was a civil rights activist, co-founded the National Organization for Women, and was the first black woman ordained as an episcopal priest.

Those who knew her say she wasn't your typical, soft-spoken and well-behaved saint.

"She was fiesty, let me tell you. If Pauli didn't like something you said, she'd cut you off at the knees," said Bishop Michael Curry. She was a saint. She wasn't no sweet saint, but she was a saint."
