NEW HANOVER COUNTY – Dozens of people and businesses will be displaced due to a massive bypass project along the coast.

State transportation officials have approved routes for the Military Cutoff Road Extension and the Hampstead Bypass. They estimate more than 50 homes and 40 businesses will have to move because of construction, which is set to begin in 2017.

Detailed plans have yet to be released. A meeting will be held next month to further discuss the issue.

The project is expected to cost $362 million.
