LUMBERTON, N.C. – A Columbus County man accused of shooting and killing an off-duty Lumberton police officer made his first appearance in court Wednesday morning.

Marques Brown, 27, of Whiteville, is charged with the murder of 33-year-old Jeremiah Goodson at the Shell gas station on Fayetteville Road near Interstate 95. Police say Goodson was shot Tuesday when he approached the suspect, who was wanted on several crimes. Another officer who was called for backup took Brown into custody.

Goodson was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Brown kept his head down and spoke few words Wednesday as a Robeson County judge informed that he has been charged with the shooting death of Officer Goodson.

"There are things about his work that I won't tell you right now, that may be involved with what transpired yesterday," said Robeson County DA Johnson Britt.

Brown's criminal record dates back to 2004 when he was convicted with felony breaking and entering and served two years in prison. Britt would not discuss brown's criminal record, but did say it will come into play in their case.

Brown is being held without bond.
