GREENSBORO -- Greensboro Police say thieves have stolen dozens of new tires and rims off trucks at a half-dozen commercial trucking companies.

The thefts started in February and since that time over a half dozen commercial truck companies have been hit.

"The method of how the entry was made and what was taken, it makes us believe it's going to be the same individuals that are committing these crimes,'' said Greensboro Police Detective K.D. Springs, Jr.

The thieves often cut through fences and take the tires and rims right off the new big rigs. They got 48 at one business alone. At up to a $1,000 each, the losses are adding up.

''If you total up all the business that have been victims, the total loss is way over $100,000,'' said Springs.

The operations sell and service 18 wheelers. They're mostly within a few miles of each other, clustered along Interstate 48/85 in Greensboro, because that's where their business is located. Police says that makes them easy targets.

["All the businesses are located off the highway, so it's easy to get in and get out, and go in any direction,'' said Springs.

Police and business owners think there's an organized crime ring operating in the area.

"From the way the tires are being selected, it seems like the suspects may be taking orders,'' said Springs.

Police say other agencies across the state aren't reporting any similar crimes, but but do say the price of tires -- and demand -- is up nationwide.
