CARRBORO, N.C. -- Wednesday, Carrboro residents could find out if a controversial dollar store will be allowed to open shop. Town leaders are considering plans to build a Family Dollar store, but many people are opposed to the project.

Wednesday night, the Carrboro Board of Adjustment will meet at Town Hall. During a public hearing, they expect to hear from residents before weighing in on development plans. While goods at the shop may cost a dollar or so, the idea of a Family Dollar is stirring up hundreds of concerns.

For weeks, many Carrboro residents have made it clear they're opposing plans to open an 8,000 square foot Family Dollar right in their backyards. During a protest earlier this month, homeowners said the store would end up less than 50 feet from some houses if it's built as planned. The store would go up in a wooded area in the Alabama Avenue community.

The project still needs to get a variance and a special use permit. The Board of Adjustment discussed the store during a meeting last week but did not make a final call because so many people signed up to speak.

The meeting resumes Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. More than 400 people have signed a petition to stop the Family Dollar. Some will get the chance to voice their concerns at the meeting.
