RALEIGH -- UNC Health Care and WakeMed announced a partnership Tuesday that would end their long-standing feud over Rex Hospital in Raleigh and boost mental health services in Wake County.

WakeMed said it would drop its pursuit to purchase Rex Hospital and UNC Health Care would invest $30 million in a new psychiatric facility in Wake County, and invest $10 million for mental health services over 5 years.

In addition, UNC and WakeMed would continue their medical education partnership, and UNC Health Care will voluntarily file tax reports on its private, non-profit entities, including Rex Healthcare.

Both health care systems also have dropped all outstanding public requests for records.

The announcement happened at the General Assembly Tuesday, with the support of House and Senate leaders.
