DURHAM -- The dean of Duke Chapel gave his final sermon at the university Sunday. The Rev. Dr. Sam Wells left the church and university he's served for the past seven years.

Last fall, the archbishop of Canterbury asked Wells to return to England to take over as vicar of Saint Martin in the Fields Church in London. Wells described his time serving the city of Durham and its signature university as an opportunity unlike any other.

"The divinity school is in my view the finest in the world and I'd already corresponded and worked with several faculty members of the divinity school before I came," said Wells. "Duke Chapel is unique because it's the leading research university chapel in America. There's no other job quite like this."

Wells is Canadian by birth but was raised in southwestern England.
