MONROE—The Monroe Bypass has hit a road block after its construction was halted by a court order.

The North Carolina Turn Pike Authority received news Thursday from the U.S. Court of Appeals to halt planned construction of the road. The court ruled that the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration did not adequately consider the full environmental impact of the 20-mile toll road from Matthews to Union County.

Construction of the Monroe Bypass was expected to begin this summer.

N.C. Turn Pike Authority spokesperson Reid Simons said despite the delay they can continue working in a limited capacity.

“Technically we can move along with design and right-of-way as we've planned but construction will be delayed for sometime, we're not sure about how long at this point," said Simons.

Simons said they will have a more definitive time line and cost assessment by next week.

They say the Monroe Bypass delays will have no impact on the Garden Parkway project in Gaston County.
