RALEIGH—A dentist in Raleigh is spreading smiles to some people in need Friday.

Village Dental on Edwards Mill Road is offering free cleanings and tooth extraction. The event is sponsored by Dentistry From the Heart, a national nonprofit that provides free dental care for people who can not afford it.

Patients say the event is a huge help for people who have to cut costs in this tough economy.

"You decide, 'Am I going to eat today or am I going to get my teeth cleaned and get dental care.' We do what we have to do. We eat, and we put the dental care and health care on the side burner. But these things, these types of events are really great for us," said patient Shonda Hurtt.

Dentistry From the Heart has provided free dental care to over 25,000 people since it started in 2001. Friday's event runs until 4:30 p.m.
