LOUISBURG, N.C. – Jerry Jones officially took his post as Franklin County Sheriff Friday after a swearing in ceremony in Louisburg. Jones replaces Sheriff Pat Green who is the subject of an SBI investigation.
Green resigned in January and later admitting taking $90,000 from the office. He hasn't been charged, but the SBI is investigating the disappearance of more than $200,000.
Green's Chief Deputy, Elliot Pinnell, was named Interim Sheriff but resigned to take a job at the Duke University Police Department.
During a brief speech at his swearing in, Jones addressed the topic on everyone's mind.
"The question they ask is how are you going to restore integrity to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office,” said Jones.
He said that will happen with an overhaul of the office's financial dealings, including dual control with the county finance director and more transparency.
"I will assure the people of Franklin County that it's not happening, and I will be able to show them it's not happening," Jones said.
Jones says he'll also bring in an outside auditor and investigators.
"We'll have SBI be requested to come in and inventory all the evidence and we'll start with a clean bill of health just as soon as we can," Jones said.
Commissioners announced Jones' appointment Monday and since then he's put together a transition team that has already made changes. Jones says he'll also work to fix some inefficiencies which come from the office not having a defined leader for the past several months.
Jones also served as sheriff from 2002 to 2006. He wasn't re-elected and was criticized after a 2004 rescue helicopter crash that killed one of his deputies.
"We know there will be people who bring it back up, but we also felt that that was a learning experience for him and that he accepted that responsibility at that particular time,” said Franklin County Board of Commissioners Chair Sidney Dunston.
Jones says he's coming back stronger.
"People took a chance on Jerry Jones," he said. "Those are the people that know that nobody's perfect but I do the best I can with my heart into it and that's all you can ask from anybody."
Jones' term expires in 2014.
