KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – Several police officers in Kernersville are on administrative leave and a suspect is in custody after an officer-involved shooting overnight.
Kernersville police say the officers were involved in an undercover drug operation in Winston-Salem with several other agencies.
They say the suspect, Justin Nathaniel Thorns, agreed to meet the officers downtown to sell crack-cocaine. But police say when they attempted to arrest him, Thorns tried to hit one of the officers with his vehicle.
The officers fired shots at his car, but police say Thorns drove off, hitting two police vehicles and a dumpster.
He was captured a short time later.
Thorns is facing two counts of possession with intent to sell cocaine, eight counts of trafficking and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held under a $525,000 bond.
Meanwhile, the State Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
