WILMINGTON – A chemical fire at the Invista fiber plant in Wilmington lit up the sky early this morning, causing multiple 911 calls.

A New Hanover County sheriff's deputy described it as a "large ball of fire in the sky," and 911 calls came in from as far away as Brunswick and Pender counties.

No one was injured. It happened around 4:40 a.m. Sunday morning at Invista's plant at 4600 Highway 421 North.

Officials at the nearby GE plant five miles away reported the fire was so bright it whited out their security cameras.

Initially, authorities were unable to pinpoint where the bright blast came from, but a driver on Highway 421 reported seeing smoke from the Invista plant.

EMS and fire officials responded, but Invista workers had already put the fire out.
