RALEIGH – One man is dead after an early morning accident in Raleigh.

The State Highway Patrol says a trooper tried to stop a driver in a Maserati around 1 a.m. on Capital Boulevard near Interstate 440. They say the driver, 34-year-old Daniel Barillas, was speeding through downtown Raleigh.

Troopers say Barillas led the trooper on a brief chase onto Capital, where he lost control of his car and slammed into a tree near the off ramp.

Troopers believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but are awaiting official confirmation from the medical examiner.
