FAYETTEVILLE – The Lost Heroes Art Quilt arrived in Fayetteville this weekend and will be on display at the Airborne Special Operations Museum.

The quilt was made to honor the sacrifices of soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who died fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The quilt arrived Saturday with a motorcycle escort. It has 50 squares to represent a service member from every state. The pictures are in black and white to signify the loss.

Lorie Southerland, whose son and eight other soldiers from the 82nd Airborne died in Iraq in 2007, said she is proud to see the quilt go on display in a community where so many families have been touched by war. She donated a picture of her son for the quilt.

Once the quilt is finished touring across America, it will continue to help families of fallen soldiers; on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, it will be auctioned off to benefit the charity Snowball Express, which supports children of fallen service members by taking them on trips during the holidays.

The quilt will be on display in Fayetteville until March 20. It will then travel to Raleigh to go on display at the North Carolina Museum of History from March 21 to March 28.
