CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman says he's worried budget cuts will prevent the district from addressing a rise in violence.
His announcement came a day after the state released its school crime and violence numbers for last year.
The numbers are up and they're above the state average.
Prior to this year, the school district absorbed a $2 million budget cut and laid off 60 security associates. Now, district leaders are considering cutting more money from school law enforcement or reducing other staff that targets at-risk kids.
“We're trying to segregate those areas and not include them in further cuts, but I continue to be concerned,” Gorman said. “we have fewer options than we've had in previous years.”
Gorman says a recent poll of CMS parents, students and teachers shows most feel the schools are safe. 96 percent of surveyed parents felt that way, while nearly 90 percent of teachers and students did, too.
