FORT BRAGG – Soldiers and their families got the Hollywood treatment this weekend at Fort Bragg.
The world premiere of the movie "Dear John" was held Saturday at Fort Bragg's York Theatre. Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, the stars of the movie, joined author Nicholas Sparks for the showing.
The movie follows a college student and a soldier as they fall in love, spending years writing letters to one another as Tatum's character is deployed overseas.
"We really just wanted to make a beautiful movie about two kids falling in love and extraordinary people and extraordinary circumstances and what these people do and their lives and military lives in general is extraordinary and I hope they are not disappointed in it," said Tatum.
Sparks says the inspiration for the novel was his cousin, who served in the Army.
"He was a Stryker out of Fort Lewis in Washington, part of the first wave into the Iraq, and just some of the things he went through formed a lot of this story," said Sparks.
For fan Amanda Trahan, the story hits close to home.
"Probably with my husband with the deployments and making it through them,” said Trahan. “We have been through three now.”
Amanda Seyfried said starring in the film gave her a better perspective on what military families go through during deployments.
"Things get really hard and that is the way it is,” said Seyfried. “I have met so many women here who are going through what my character is going through, but it is real life."
"Dear John" opens in theaters nationwide on Feb. 5.
