SUGAR MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The snow and extreme winter temperatures aren’t causing tourists to shy away from the North Carolina mountains.

For the last several weeks, the mountains have been battered by several snow storms that knocked down trees and power lines and closed roads.

Sugar Mountain Ski Resort officials say business in the last few weeks has been the best it’s been in years.

“It just gets people a lot more excited when we have snow on the ground instead of just manmade snow,” Erich Schmidinger, with Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, said. “We can still have great skiing with manmade snow, but with natural snow, a lot of people get excited.”

Officials say the bad economy is also helping business. They say people are staying local and using North Carolina ski resorts instead of driving out of state.
